Younger Lagoon: New Lagoon in Good Times

Burrowing Owl
Burrowing Owls and Beach Dunes

Burrowing Owls were once common throughout Central Coast; however, as human population has increased Burrowing Owls have declined.  This species primarily uses ground squirrel burrows in open grassland areas as refuge and nesting habitat.  During the fall and winter of 2010/2011 a Burrowing Owl took up residence in a ground squirrel burrow on the back dune of the beach.  This overwintering individual was frequently seen during the day foraging around the beach and lagoon area perching in front of beach dune vegetation or on downed woody material.
