“The mission of the Natural Reserve System is to contribute to the understanding and wise management of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service at protected natural areas throughout California.”

Working under the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, The Natural Reserve System (NRS) delegates day-to-day management of its reserves to the campuses. UCSC now has four active NRS reserves and a Campus Natural Reserve that is not part of NRS.
